Why you should be on tubeless

Tubeless tyres on mountain bikes have become the performance standard here in South Africa. We have some big camel thorns and some seriously sharp Karoo rock. The best way to get you and your bike through these African hazards is nothing! Thats right nothing, fresh air between your rim and your tyre! There are 3 solid reasons why you should ride tubeless rather than tubes. Firstly you will have less flats that's for sure and you definitely won't have any of those snakebite or pinch flats that tubes are prone too.Secondly performance, there is a reason why cars today are on tubeless tyres. Its because the tyre can perform the way it was designed to, and that's just what you need on your MTB. The last reason is because you will be able to save some more weight by ditching the tubes. So if you want to have less flats, save weight and go faster then get yourself a tubeless conversion otherwise just carry on plodding along.

The journey to the ABSA Cape Epic

Last night the journey to the 2012 ABSA Cape Epic began. Our entry was confirmed and we will be representing OFM radio. It has been more than three years, three kids (between the 2 of us), and for me 12 kilograms since we last took on the great adventure. So, yes, things will be very different, and the road to the 25th of March 2012 will not be easy. But it has been a goal for us to return for a 5th time and next year we will do it.

Watch this blog for updates on what will hopefully be progress towards the greatest mountain bike race on earth.

The real average guy.

Weather or not mountain bikers should ride

This weekend there was literally a storm in a tea cup down at the Whine2whales stage race in the Western Cape. A rather unseasonal cold front moved through the Cape and brought some seriously wet and cold weather that prompted the organisers to cancel the 3rd and last day of the event. There was mixed reactions from riders and on lookers alike. Burry Stander was clearly having none of it when he tweeted "7deg with wind and pissin rain. no thanks. " then there was local Cape rider Shan Wilson who was less than impressed with one of his tweets "This must have been a back line decision from the touch rugby squad!!! Riders signed indemnities!! ". I don't suppose it helped that one of the main sponsors was Maseratti, maybe with a good old Subaru or a Toyota Hilux or even a Nissan bakkie the organisers would have been able to supply the necessary backup and support to finish the race off. You just have to look at the Freedom Challenge to know that there is no limit to where and when you can go on your mountain bike. So was it the riders or the organisers who had to HTFU?

The training experiment

Mountain bike training and achieving physical fitness may be an exact science but getting it to work is not nearly as exact. There are so many variables at play like the type of activity, length, intensity, age of rider, rest intervals etc. Putting all these things into place forms the basis of a training plan and so the possibilities are endless. However one thing you can be sure of is that experimentation and adjustments to training plans will bring different results. So if you are not performing as you think you should then look at changing your plan. If you are performing then look at your plan and see what it is that you could do to perform even better. Goals, focus and discipline in terms of the overall plans as well as individual exercises will be cornerstones of any successful training experiment. If you need some ideas check out Joe Friel's Mountain Bikers Training bible.

The secret about tyres

Tyres are usually the last thing you look at when you buy a new bike. Thats quite normal because they are the easiest part to change on your bike once you have it. But many people never do. If you think about it tyres are one of the most important parts of your bike. They affect the weight of your bike on the wheels where it really matters. A saving on your tyres can easily translate to a kilogram or more which is huge for weight on wheels. Then of course the tyres are where you and your bike meet the earth. So the power that you apply to the pedals goes through those knoblies, the traction that you need comes from there and that all important rolling resistance or friction that slows us down is purely a function of your tyres. So pay attention to your tyres next time they may be able to help you more than you think.

An Epic Route Revealed

The Absa Cape Epic is out with a fresh new look and new route.

Launched yesterday the new route is unexpected as usual but as tough as expected. A monster Stage 3 Day of 147km and 2900m of climbing may prove to be the hardest day at the epic yet, something you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy. This year there is no time trial "rest day" in the middle like last year. The race will start off with a time trial in the Durbanville area on Contermanskloof singletrack which should be great. Then it will visit the towns of Robertson, Caledon and old stalwart Oak Valley before finishing at Lourensford. If you haven't started training then you had better get some training advice and get on your bike immediately is you want to make it past day 3.

24 hours of mountain biking

So where is the soul of mountain biking at the moment? It seems to move around as the sport of mountain biking evolves and develops. Spend some time at a 12hr or 24hr mountain bike event and you would not be mistaken for thinking that this is where the soul of MTB is. This race format is popular because it caters for many different types of mtbikers. It brings together a group of weekend warriors, you see the baggy clad hippy types, the hardcore solo endurance racer and there is a good laid back vibe with music and beer. All the ingredients for some good fun, then take away the sun and you have a night riding vibe. The route is usually interesting and technical, long enough to be interesting and short enough keep it safe. So pack your cooler box, camp kit, bike and load up your friends and family for a really fun event.

The most watched MTB video in Africa

Its been all over twitter, facebook, youtube and sky sports and must be the most watched South African MTB video on the internet ever. Evan van der Spuy proved that you can't outrun a red hartebees. At a race in KZN he found himself going head to head with the buck. The dramatic footage was caught on film by the rider behind him with a helmet cam. The video was put up on youtube and has clocked up almost 6 million views in less than a week. You can check it out on our facebook page. Buck van der Spuy as he is being called doesn't really remember what happened, checkout this Bicycling interview with him.

Howick MTB trail review and video

Tucked away in a dip less than a stones throw from the busy N3 in the Natal Midlands lies the little town of Howick. It is all hustle bustle but unassuming, old school and filed with farm vehicles and people. Over the rise in the bordering Sappi forests lies the secret network of some of the most awesome single track that you will find in SA. Laid out in the form of a fan from the highest point in the area is a selection of mountain bike trails from smooth flowing forest lanes to gnarly rock gardens that will make you clinch or break your teeth depending on your skill level.

The Howick trail system has been setup and controlled by the Howick Mountain Bike club. This mountain bikers paradise is not well known, not because it is hidden but rather due to its low key nature. Checkout our cool MTB trail video from Howick

If you ride you race?

What is it with bicycles and racing? There is something that happens when two bikes meet, be it on the trail, on the road, in the woods or on the playground.

Just take two kids who have just learned to ride, put them together and before you know it they will be racing. To see who can get there fastest or who can pass who. Two arbitary people can meet on the road, one on a daily commute with a single speed with no brakes and the other out for his training ride, you can be sure that if they get close  enough the race is on. Maybe it is just a combination of man and machine that want to discover what their potential is or maybe its is just because it is serious harmless fun.

Roadies have come out in the open ages ago, they blatantly admit wanting to be the fastest. But mountain bikers whether you ride trails, downhills or just commute, you have to admit that there is a bit of a racer in you, it just happens when you get on that bike.

Help find stolen bikes

Bike theft is a world wide problem, don't think it only happens in SA. There is a great initiative setup to manage the trade in stolen bikes, it is called the National Bike Registry. They are appealing to all buyers and sellers in second hand/used bikes to list serial numbers of their bikes on the net. This in support of a campaign to put pressure on organized bike theft in South Africa ... sometimes under violent conditions. Visit the National Bicycle Registry South Africa at www.nbrza.co.za where you can list a stolen bike and check to see if a bike that you intend purchasing has been listed as stolen. Also report any incidents or keep an eye on @bicyclesafetysa on twitter.

Handmade in South Africa

When you talk mountain bikes made in South Africa then there is one name that stands out head and shoulders above all else, MOREWOOD. The 100% South African bike brand cut their teeth on the downhill circuits of the world and made a big name for themselves outside of South Africa. Patrick Morewood was the man with the vision and the know how to build some of the finest downhill mountain bikes in the world. It was only in the late 2000's that they started to become more well known in South Africa. The factory is in Pietermaritzburg where they continue to handcraft beautiful mountain bikes including downhill, cross country and 29ers. Gary Perkin recently did a factory tour and made a superb video of their production facility. It is an awesome feeling watching a video like this and knowing that I ride one of these world class bikes with the cool label on the seat post that reads "Handmade in Pietermarizburg South Africa". http://vimeo.com/garyperkin/handmade

Medeocre to winner, what does it take?

We received a mail from an aspiring mountain biker Rodney Pedro who is on a mission to become competitive. That got me thinking about what it takes to be world class mountain biker? What qualities do these super humans poses and how much of what they have is talent? Well the most comfortable answer for all of us is just to say that they have genetics and serious talent, that makes us all feel a lot better and lets us justify our own mediocre performance.

Interestingly training guru Joe Friel has a different view on this. Writing in his blog about excellence he lists the qualities that by experience he has detected in successful athletes coached by himself. They are most importantly of all motivation then discipline, confidence, focus and patience. Notice that he didn't say anything about innate talent, physiology, skills, or even experience in the sport. All of these things can be developed and learned if the other predictors are there. Those predictors are also the same ones that differentiate people who can stick to training programs and those who can't. So if you really want to get on top of your improved fitness or performance then think about your motivation, discipline, confidence, focus and patience.

Switzerland has it all - Eurobike and world champs

If you were wondering where you should be this week then we will tell you - Switzerland. That's not because they have the Alps and more MTB trails than you can dream about. Its because they have Eurobike 2011 and the MTB World Champs on this weekend. Eurobike is just one big bike party, sure its business but really, can you take anyone in the bike industry seriously? Judging by the photos from the #scottparty definitely not. Nevertheless there will be loads of new bike models and cool accessories and other bike bits coming out of this mega bike show.

The the MTB World Champs is underway in Champery and there are many South Africans riding, not just the big guns Burry and Greg but a whole crop of youngsters too. There will be coverage on Supersport 5 this weekend so look out for that or checkout Freecaster.tv for live coverage. Word on the trail is that the 29ers are getting hammered by the 26ers, interesting ....

29ers big wheels, big talk, big speed?

The 29er revolution just keeps on rolling on and gaining momentum. It is the great unknown until you have tried it for yourself. If you speak to the guys who ride them it may seem like they are evangelists but they are really just trying to tell you that it is a different ride.

It is difficult to explain and quantify. I can equate it to the new bike feeling, that's the fast feeling that you get when you ride a new bike for the first few times. Somehow it just seems to go better than your old bike. It feels like the big wheels roll faster and easier over the rocks and the bike feels very stable.

Don't be fooled though a 29er hardtail is no replacement for a 26" full sus, 0" travel just isn't the same as 4" travel no matter how big the wheels.

But the big wheels sure are fun to ride, even if they are a bit heavier.

Epic bubble or epic growth?

Are we in a stage race bubble or is it just epic growth?

The definition of an economic bubble is "trade in high volumes at prices that are considerably at variance with intrinsic values". High volumes, well there are almost more MTB stage races than one day races at the moment and every year another few events enter the annual calendar. In fact there are very few if any individuals who can claim to have done all the stage races in the country. Everyone is doing them, rugby players, soccer players, TV presenters, comedians and even roadies!

When the first stage race, the Cape Epic emerged it offered a challenge second to none and a unique concept of being fully catered. Entry fee for the first race in 2004 R3900 per rider, then in 2005 it jumped to R5600 for the 8 day race. Buy 2007 it was costing R5950 and this year in 2011 the entry fee was R14500 per rider and the 2012 fee is set at R17700. That is quite a steep increase in price and if you consider that the race does not offer significantly more value. It is still essentially the same, 7-8 days riding and staying in tents with catering style food. Is that worth paying in excess of R2000 per day for? Its big business for sure with races like the Absa Cape Epic being billed as entrepreneurial success stories. Add into the mix the fact that we have entered an extended global downturn where consumers are demanding more for less and it makes you wonder whether the bubble is getting a bit large.

Sani2c entries for 2012 are up to R4500 per rider for 3 days riding. Thats R1500 a day for a shared tent and catered food. granted there are tons of extras and free food throughout so definitely more added value there. Both of these events are still oversubscribed and although it is difficult to get an entry initially it seems to be getting easier to pickup an entry later on as the years pass, indicating that the demand may be dropping off. There is a definite heard mentality around these events as everyone wants to get them behind their name. So it definitely appeals to first timers, but for the returning masses who have got the kit and the medals the queations are being asked, what else could I do with this money, take the family on a holiday or organise an overseas riding trip with my mates?

Its not about the training program.

Training programs are a dime a dozen and the best training program around is the one that you will follow. If you don't follow it then it doesn't matter how good it is and it is really no better than a blank piece of paper.

So the next time you want a training program then consider some basic sanity checks. Can you make the time to follow it? Is it simple, do you understand it?, Is it flexible, can you achieve it? How realistic it is for you to do considering your current time constraints and fitness level?

Remember that with all training programs what you get out of the program is what you put into it. So its not about the training program its about you.

Oh, and if you substitute coach for program above, then you can draw a similar conclusion.

Relax and take a deep breath

Relax and take a deep breath, it is guaranteed to give you a boost. When you are riding you get caught up in the excitement, the tension, the concentration and yes the exhaustion. When you are on a climb, or even better before a climb, just relax and take a few deep breaths, you will feel the extra oxygen work its way through your body to the muscles as your heart rate drops ever so slightly and you feel a boost. I do it all the time, especially when the going gets really tough. It also works on the downhills and before those really technical bits that are frightening. It even works when you crest the peak or come around a blind corner and see the world below you, relax take a deep breath and take it all in.

So next time that you are suffering, or frightened or zoned out, remember take a deep breath and relax, its your free drug - oxygen.

Training is a journey

Mountain bike training is a journey, just like a travelling journey it is something that can have various outcomes depending on when, where, how and why. A journey has no defined rules but rather a set of guidelines depending on the circumstances and the traveler. That is why there is not just one training plan, they all exist to address some specific needs of the traveler and to reach the desired destination. The most important part of a training plan is to know why you are doing it, how you are going to get there and where you would like to arrive. The training journey is made up of many many trips, each one of them plays a part to get you to your ultimate destination. Sometimes you get lost, sometimes you stop and rest for a while, but at the end of the day you must continue on that long journey.

Keep looking at the map or GPS and keep on moving, its the only way that you will get there. Once you think you have arrived you will see more hills in the distance and realise that this really is a journey

New XT groupset out now

Coming to a mountain bike near you is the all new XT groupset from Shimano. The Deore XT groupset is a favorite amongst the majority of serious mountain bikers. It has always offered great technology and durability at a reasonable cost. The first XT groupset was born in 1982 and the last major XT upgrade was in 2008.

The trickle down effect of technology is evident with the new XT benefiting from the last upgrades to the XTR race groupset. The new XT groupset is now and features a 2x10 crankset, xt servo-wave brakes and new xt wheelsets for xc and trail riding.

Dawn Patrol MTB

The early morning mountain bike ride has to be one of the best things about riding MTB. Its hard to get up sometimes when it is still dark and cold but the feeling of achievement once you return in the warm sunlight after a great ride makes it worth it every time. It is the reason that we do it over and over again. Check out our Dawn Patrol Video and get an idea what it is like to catch the first light of the day as it creeps over the hills.

Keep warm with winter racing

Stay warm and in shape with some MTB races this winter. Its the best way to stay motivated keep fit and stay on your bike. The Nissan trailseeker series is an excellent race series that runs through the winter in Gauteng. There are a variety of distances to suit all levels with the first event coming up at Hazeldean next weekend. In the Cape there are also races almost every weekend as the winter is when most of the MTBs get dusted off. So get out there and soak up that winter sun.

The state of the bike industry ......

Our part time engineer, single track lover and general wise guy Christie had some pearls of wisdom recently about the state of the bike industry and its future

I wonder when the bike industry will start thinking outside the box (or should I say circle??) and come up with some real improvements??

I suggest they look at the following:

1. Make bikes cheaper by offering less options

2. Design rear suspension bearings to last longer than the frame, improved suspension seals to increase service intervals...

3. Standardize on frame interfaces such as seat post diameter, bb, headset, axles, brake mounts...

but instead of looking at above mentioned improvements to cut cost and survive hard economical times, and at the same time making it more affordable for the less afluant riders, they rather re-invent the wheel and come out with 29'ers, 3 different rear wheel axle options, 3 different front axle options, 10 models of each tire, numerous tapered headset sizes.... to name a few... and these all just inflate costs instead of reducing....

I'm all for improvements and using space age technology on bikes, but I would really like to see some standardization on certain things....

I mean, do we really need 3 different wheel sizes!!!??? nevermind all the other things like 5 different seatpost sizes....

The bike industry currently goes against conventional wisdom and in tough times, instead of consolidating and aim to be more cost effective, it re-invents the wheel (literally..) and brings out yet another specie, which just drives up cost further... it will be interesting see if it will mean the survival or demise of the bike industry over the next 10 years....

Mates on Bikes Pics

Riding MTB with your mates is really what mountain biking is all about. Doing it by yourself is only half the fun. So you must have plenty of stories and pics about the places you ride and the people who you ride with. Thats why we started the Mates on Bikes photo album on our Facebook page. You can go there and upload a pic of you and your mates riding your favorite trails or even some new trails. Tell us where you rode, who was riding with you and what it was like.

Less training and more speed

We have just completed a successful experiment and proved to ourselves that with less training you can go faster. Sound too good to be true? Well you better believe it, its true.

But there is a catch, you have to train harder. It is just a piece of the training puzzle, but a very valuable piece. It is not a new concept and has been covered by many coaches including guru Joe Friel in his book The Mountain bikers training bible. Bottom line is that if you want to race hard and go fast then you must train hard and train fast. But it must be high intensity, when it feels like torture then you will know that you are doing it right. This is where the less comes in, because you do such high intensity you need to do fewer hours, to allow for recovery and then be able to put in the hard work when you need to. Training is the art of knowing your body mixed with the science of sound training principles. Learn the principles from a decent coach or read some mtb training books. The art will come from experience.

Sani2c chilly but dry

Sani2c has all the ingredients for awesome mountain biking. It is always
going to be good, but when the sun is shining and all you can see is blue
sky then you can't beat it.

The riders come for the singletrack but they get so much more. Cool
clothing, tons of food and drink, great hospitality and if you own a Subaru
you can get even more. Thanks to all the farmers and organisers involved -
great job!

Joberg2C and Sani2C - its all happening in May

The mountain bike racing feast carries on and KZN continues to catch the mountain biking spotlight. Its all about getting to the sea on your bike down those pristine singletracks that Farmer Glen and his crew have organised. It has to be one of the coolest riding experiences in South Africa, in fact in May its probably going to be a bit of a freezing experience. The Underberg supermarkets must be coining it with all these hungry travelers passing through their sleepy hollow.

The MTBOnline crew will be riding again as team Snackwells BATSEAL. We will be powered by Snackwells Chips, who are also an official supplier to Subaru Sani2C this year, so look out for those crisps to refuel your tired body. Then of course the tubeless wheels will be filled with BATSEAL tire sealant, our only choice for puncture protection. Bikes will be a full suspension Morewood Zula and a GT Zaskar 29er, both bikes fitted with Shimano groupsets and Ritchey components.

If you are riding Sani2C then good luck and see you on the trail, if not then check out this sani2c video of Day 2 and see what you will be missing out on.

Downhill finals video from UCI World Cup

The UCI World Cup in Pietermaritzburg has come and gone. Here is our final update on this event. It is a video of the downhill finals that went down to the wire with Greg Minnaar doing us proud. The video features snippets all the way down the track of most of the woman's and men's finalists, including several up and coming South Africans and all the big names including Peat, Atherton, Garcia, Minnaar and Neetling. Greg missed the top step by less than a quarter of a second to USA rider Aaron Gwin. The vibe and crowd noise on Greg's final run was something special. If you want to get exercise and watch sport at the same time then get out and support downhill MTB races, even the qualifying rounds, its the most fun you will have off your bike.

Video from the XCO World Cup in Pietermatizburg

The MTB World Cup in Pietmermritzburg delivered some awesome racing. If you missed out on the action checkout our mtb world cup video of the mens final. Burry Stander had a bad day at the office with two wipe outs and a major mechanical to his derailleur that saw him pushing up the steep climb with no gears. His second wipeout in the notorious rock garden was spectacular. Looks like those big 29er wheels don't roll over everything after all.

KZN is SA mecca of MTB?

Is KZN the mecca of mountain biking in South Africa? If not then they are rapidly on their way there, lets see how it stacks up. To be the mecca you would need at least some world class events, some local world champions and enough world class trails.

Well this weekend sees the MTB world cup in Pietermaritzburg and it is here for the second time so you can tick off the first requirement. Then competing in this event with realistic chances of winning will be two local world Champions in Burry Stander from the south coast and Greg Minnaar from the maritzburg area, so you can tick off the second requirement. Then lets talk about MTB trails, well without thinking too much you can quickly tick off Giba Gorge and Hola trails, two world class facilities. Having spent the last week in the Howick area I would also add in the Howick MTB trail network, an incredible network of awesome trails right on the doorstep of Howick.

So don't think of KZN midlands as the sleepy hollow but rather the rising giant of MTB in South Africa.

Giant Week of Riding

This weekend sees the 15th edition of the Giants Castle MTB Challenge being held in the drakensberg. This is one of the original, oldest and longest running MTB races in the country. It is one of those special events that gives MTB riders access to really remote trails that are not available at any other time. Its a race of extremes, starting off with a blistering fast 80km/h dash downhill on tar from the Giants Castle Reserve, to the compulsory portage up the Ntondolo ridge to get to some of the best mountain top single track, then its the legendary Giants downhill that defines this race and you end off with a brutal climb back up to the finish area. This race should be on your MTB bucket list. Entries open at the end of each year and are usually taken up quickly by the returning faithful in search of their personal number boards. So mark it down for next year April and take part in some SA MTB history and make a significant contribution to wildlife conservation in South Africa.

If you are still suffering from an Epic hangover after the feast of pro MTB racing that we had during this years epic then we have got just the cure for you. Take a few shots of UCI MTB World Cup racing next week from 22-24 April in Pietermaritzburg. Round up some mates and head to the trail side to the worlds best riders and to support our local hero's Burry and Greg as they gun for victory in the first round of MTB world cup for 2011.

29er or not To9er

29er bikes are all the rage at the moment thanks to many pro teams at the recent ABSA Cape Epic. The 29er is seen by many as the ultimate solution to providing a smoother ride and getting over difficult obstacles more easily. The main difference between a 29inch and a 26inch is the wheel size with the 29er having a larger wheel diameter. On paper it all looks good, but how that translates on the trail is still quite debatable and there are pros and cons. So the best is to get some bikes and test ride them for yourself. That is what we did, checkout the Turner Sultan 29er review thanks to Dion. If you have ridden a 29er and have views then please share so that we can learn

The biggest mountain bike show on earth?

The biggest mountain bike show on earth is rolling and gaining momentum. It is day 4 and Stage 3 for ABSA Cape Epic 2011, and unless you have been living in a hole you will have heard about it, or be following it or be addicted to it. Today riders are on their way from Tulbagh to Worcester 125km and 1900m of climbing. The prologue was spectacular and the first 2 stages have been hard, claiming at least 5 collar bones so far. Yesterday the 104km took the pros over 4h32 to finish and the back markers had 10 hours to avoid cut off.

There is a ton of information out there, check our epic resources and follow the event with epic twitter updates and news stories. The epic website also has the results and live tracking. On TV you can catch the half hour highlights package every night at 22h00 with repeats the following day. On Sunday get your morning ride in early so that you can park off on the couch and enjoy the final stage live on Supersport.

An Epic Weekend

Its an Epic weekend ahead of us the Absa Cape Epic 2011 kicks off on Sunday and you can catch it all live on TV. The whole prologue will be live on TV from 09h00 to 14h00 on Supersport. If you are in the Cape then get out to Tokai forest to see all the pros and support the local boys, Kevin, David and Burry, the racing will be awesome. The 2011 Epic is going to be tough as usual, with Stage 1 89km 2050m ascent, Stage 2 104km 2300m ascent and Stage 5 143km 2350m of climbing, its going to be epic as usual. This race produces many amazing stories like this one, Adam Ferris returning home from the cold after 38 years away to ride.

Here is a bonus for this week, another example of how mountain biking trails in South Africa are progressing. Karkloof Classic in KZN put this together to show what they are doing to prepare for the Karlkloof classic 2011. World class trails and a world class mtb video production, check it out, better still go ride the trails.

The Cape of Singletrack

The Cape has always had the lions share of quality MTB trails with a handful of marked and purpose built trails in Tokai, Jonkershoek and Lebanon thanks to the hard work and dedication of people like Meurant Botha from Dirtopia. But the singletrack revolution has been quietly busy adding to this solid base with some new trails emerging. The biggest area is in Wellington starting from Welvanpas with the whole Bains Kloof trail network offering some serious singltrack. The areas around Tygerberg Hills like Contermans, Magic forest and Merendal now also have some significant new riding options thanks to efforts by the Tygerberg MTB club

On the east coast new trails have been cut in KZN thanks to early efforts by people like Ian Wilson resulting in Giba Gorge as well as Hola trails and Sani trails. In Mpumalanga it only used to be Sabie but now there are all the trails at Mankele and Misty Mountain.
